Dear customers and friends,

Good afternoon from Kenshi of Shukado.

Today, I'd like to introduce some Yoshu Chikanobu's artworks.

Yoshu Chikanobu was an ukiyo-e artist who was active in the Meiji period.
He studied under Toyohara Kunichika and excelled at beauty and genre painting.

His career is quite unique. Before becoming ukiyo-e artist, he was a samurai warrior of the Takada domain in Echigo province, present Nigata prefecture.
Taking advantage of his position, in the beginning of his career as the ukiyo-e artist, he got popular by his samurai prints and war prints.
And then, he ensured his status as an ukiyo-e artist by his prints of beauty, which illustrated changes in women's fashion, including both traditional and Western clothing.

It is said that the number of his artworks are about 820. In this point of view, we can say that he was one of the most popular artists during the Meiji period.

Unfortunately, his fame is almost forgotten at the present day.
Yet, since this year is the 100th anniversary of his death, I hope that this will be a good chance to know about his name again.

And the followings are the prints we sell now.
